VISIT CUERNAVACA, CITY OF ETERNAL SPRING

 

Cuernavaca is a Colonial City one hour south of Mexico City famous for its year round perfect climate and language schools. It’s a relaxing place to recover from jet lag and begin your exploration of southern Mexico. Perfect for travellers who don’t want to stay in Mexico City, easier and cheaper than taking a taxi downtown. Pullman de Morelos bus from the airport every half hour, 1 ½hour , or from Tasquena Bus Terminal every 15 minutes. 1 hour.

 

Things to See in Cuernavaca

 

-Palacio de Cortes. Now a nuseunm, has mural by Diego Rivera

 

-Jardin Borda. Once country home of Emperor Maxmilian and Carlotta.

 

-Brady House. Converted momastery, now a house museum, decorated with a priceless world art collection. Includes paintings by Frida Kahlo.

 

-Archaeological site, waterfall San Anton, walk in the barranca.

 

-Lively zocalo and busy downtown market.

MEXICO CITY. One hour on busses that leave every 15 minutes

 

MOVING ON FROM CUERNAVACA

 

HEAD SOUTH to Acapulco. 3 ½ hours. Then on to the Oaxaca coast, Puerto Escondido.

 

HEAD EAST to Puebla. 3 hours. Then to Oaxaca and Chiapas and Guatemala.

 

HEAD WEST Zihuatanejo 7 hours. Toluca/Metepec 1 1/2 hours.

Guadalajara 9 hours. Then to Puerto Vallarta or Manzanillo.

TRIVIA The Shortlist of Famous Cuernavacans

 

Hernan Cortes, conquistador. His castle in the Zocalo is now a museum, with mural by Diego Rivera. His Hacienda is now a luxury hotel and concert theatre. 

 

Maximilian, emperor. His house, chapel and botanical garden open to the public.

 

Emiliano Zapata, revolutionary hero. His hotel now café and bakery. 

 

Dwight Morrow, US Embassador. Father in law of Charles Lindberg who met his wife here. Historic house now a patio restaurant La India Bonita.

 

Robert Brady, wealthy art collector. His 14 room home,an  exquisitely renovated monastery is just as he left it complete with a priceless art collection. Includes Frida Kahlos.

 

Malcolm Lowry. Author of “Under the Volcano”, set in Cuernavaca.

 

Barbara Hutton, Woolworth heiress. Her estate Sumiya, now a hotel, famous for its Japanese garden, all materials imported from Japan. Woolworths store still in the centro.
